Wonderful Wordless Books

Long before humans were glued to cell phones getting carpal tunnel syndrome from sending thousands of text messages, they communicated by talking face to face. When they could not talk in person, our ancestors communicated through drawing pictures and with paintings. Written communication is relatively new in the course of history. And electronic communication is to be considered a baby in the context of history.

Communicating through art is a an instinctive human capability. Our innate ability to discern messages through images must be a big reason why we love picture books. A wordless picture book allows the reader, or viewer, to absorb the context of the story according to their own experience and world view.

Wordless books introduce wonder and inventiveness that isn’t possible with books that have words. We are drawn into the story and the art of a picture book in a way that captures our imagination and creative sensibilities. Sans words, the reader can page through a picture book and create any story they want. The story can be short, or it can be longer than the most intimidating tome. The complexity of the story is completely in the hands–or the mind–of the reader.
