Happy Birthday, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff

Mouse was first introduced to us by Laura Numeroff in 1985 with “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie”. One of the first of the “If You Give a…” series, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie is the book that catapulted Mouse to stardom. Since then, Mouse has been the subject of seven books also written by Numeroff, including If You Take a Mouse to the Movies and If You Take a Mouse to School.

The newest Mouse book is “Happy Birthday, Mouse!” published in April of 2012.

Another simple board book continues on with the “If You Give a…” series, “Happy Birthday, Mouse!” confronts Mouse with a problem. What to eat for breakfast on his birthday! He can eat pancakes, but pig likes pancakes (as featured in “If You Give a Pig a Pancake”).

He could have a muffin, but Moose likes muffins (“If You Give a Moose a Muffin”). Or even a cupcake, but cupcakes are for Cat (“If You Give a Cat a Cupcake”). What in the world will Mouse choose?

Don’t be fooled, however, as the title can be misleading. This is not a book that details the celebration of Mouse’s birthday, just what he wants to eat for breakfast.

With roughly 18 books in the “If You Give a…” series and Mouse being the most prominent subject in the whole series, your children will love Mouse and his dilemma on the day of his birthday (no doubt that they’ve encountered a similar problem).

Numeroff knows her stuff when it comes to writing children’s books, as she’s been writing them for over 25 years. Published by HarperCollins, you can find this book as well as the other ones in the series here.
