100 Cupboards by N.D. Wilson

Sometimes life gets so busy that we forget to make that special effort with those in our lives and show them how much they mean to us. The same rings true the other way around and we find ourselves feeling alone in the world. Well, what about the time we have spent with our family, playing with our children? Has that time been sufficient in your mind?

At one time or another, we have all wished for a magical way to escape the realities of our world and live in someone else’s for a while. That is what happened to young Henry York, in the book “100 Cupboards” by N. D. Wilson.

After being dropped off to stay with his aunt and uncle’s family in Kansas, while his parents went off on yet another trip, Henry began to see what it was like to have people care about him, to be his friends. He learns how to play and have a great time. It is like reinventing the child all over again.

And then, something quite unbelievable happens, knobs began pushing their way through the plaster in the walls of his room. Henry takes the time to pick it away to reveal cupboards all over his walls. 99 of them, to be exact…and one dark and scary one in his grandfather’s room. He opened them up to see what was inside of them and there were seemingly whole new worlds waiting for him to come to visit. One was the ocean, the breeze and the salty waves. One a post office. But none were familiar to him.

Together, he and his cousin, Henrietta, set out to solve the mystery of the cupboards and a family secret that has been safely guarded for a very long time.

This book,“100 Cupboards”is a fun read with your kids or by yourself and sets you up for others in the series. Wilson has a wonderful style that the kids adore and really relate to.
