As the class moved closer and closer to the cafeteria, the strange odor got more and more intense. However, it wasn’t until they actually reached the cafeteria door that the students discovered the source of the unappetizing smell. There posted on the lunchroom door was a sign, declaring “November’s Healthy New Menu.” Today was Monday, and that meant that the cafeteria ladies were serving mackerel melt on whole grain bread. Panic set in as the students quickly headed for their place in the lunch line. They weren’t rushing to try the new menu item, however. On the contrary, they were trying to get the last of the turkey, bologna, egg salad, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The healthy new menu is only one of the challenges that the sixth graders at Leonard T. Buchwald Elementary School face in this book. The “Little Miss Helping Hand” contest and the finale of the county Math-Off will certainly bring smiles to the readers of the Pottsville Chronicles series.
