childrensbookstore – March 30, 2015:
Back for a third round of laughs, James Patterson, New York Times’ Best selling author, finishes the middle school story trilogy about the planet’s funniest kid. Jamie Grimm wasn’t always so funny. It took a serious accident, the loss of his parents and little sister, and too many days to count spent in a rehabilitation center learning how to cope with no longer being able to use his legs, to discover his funny bone. In fact, he owes his love of comedy and his gift for bringing laughter and joy into people’s lives to the doctors and staff at Hope Trust Rehab Center. Patterson’s ability to step inside the mind of a middle school kid and write about the ups and downs of those pubescent years of mayhem makes his characters lovable and believable, as well as encouraging and insightful. Jamie still goofs up, big time, in this third and final book and again he comes out of the muck he stepped in as a wiser person. There are plenty of good laughs, comical illustrations with additional jokes, and a whole lot of heart! In spite of Jamie’s ballooning ego, his friends and family (with the exception of his bullying cousin who is an even bigger jerk than Jamie is becoming) remain his truest and most loyal fans. Is Jamie really deserving of such support and devotion? It takes tragedy to pop Jamie’s ego and give him the courage necessary to face the sneering crowd at the Planet’s Funniest Kid contest and pull out his funniest stuff yet. Will Jamie’s attitude adjustment be enough to win him the million dollar price, his own television show, trophy, and fame of being the Planet’s Funniest Kid? Two thumbs up for a trilogy that is full of heart, hope, and laughter. Just like Jamie said, “No matter how serious your situation, jokes can help you feel better. Laughter can help you survive anything, no matter how horrible.”
