Having a special collection of books, to be shared with a mom or dad, is something every child should have. For one little boy named Spencer, his collection means everything to him. His absolute favorite book is Night-Night, Narwhal. Every night after the big has been read, he places it right back on his bookshelf beside his bed so he always knows where it is. Sadly, one morning Spencer wakes to find that his favorite book has been taken. Letting the missing book go Spencer chooses his next favorite book the following night. Night after night, book after book goes missing. Looking high and low, asking Mom, Dad, and rudely accusing little sister, Spencer’s only success is earning forced play with his sister to make up for his rudeness. How is Spencer to ever get a good night’s sleep if all his books have been taken? Devising a brilliant plan, Spencer sets a trap using his very last book to catch the book thief. After a wild early morning chase, Spencer finds his books, teaches a lesson to the thief, and makes several new friends. Debbie Ridpath Ohi has illustrated several books for children, but this is her first book to write and illustrate. Illustrations are juvenile, bright, bold, and entertaining. She successfully and wittingly introduces children to a mysterious creature called a narwhale. Spencer’s most beloved book is about a narwhale that looks identical to his favorite plush toy. There aren’t many children’s books about narwhales, nor plush narwhale for that matter, making that a fascinating addition to the content of the story. Ohi also uses words such as tenacious and animals like beluga, sea monkeys, and newts that will spark interest in young readers. They might even gain an interest in looking further into what Spencer loved most…Books! Young readers are sure to enjoy the mystery of the missing books, who took them, and the clever plan to retrieve the books.
