Ready to Read

When a budding reader is ready to take off, he or she knows it. There is a moment, for most kids, in first or second grade, when the words just start to make sense and flow together. The moment when they become a reader.

For parents and teachers, it is gratifying to see a youngster swell with pride that they have made such a big step. For parents and teachers, it is so important to seize that moment and provide materials that the new reader can attack and enjoy.

This list contains books that will be excellent fodder for a young reader. The stories are interesting and written at a level that a child at the moment of take-off for reading will find challenging, yes, but also read able and interesting.

The titles in this list vary a little bit in reading level. It’s up to you to decide which titles your student is ready for. Browse the list and see which one he or she will enjoy best.
