Pop Up Books

Few things capture the imagination of both children and adults like a popup book.  The three-dimensional presentation of an illustration is simply fascinating.  Here at Childrensbookstore.com, we want to promote these wonderful books so that today's children can experience the wonder of pop up books.

Pop up Books have a rich history in academic, scientific and entertainment applications.  They have been used to illustrate anatomy, as guides to the night sky and to entertain children and adults for centuries.  The science behind a good pop up book is called "paper engineering".  Designing a pop-up book requires a lot of time, paper, and trial and error to make illustrations lift then fold back correctly.  With new conceptual computer programs, intricate popup books can be refined and perfected.  However, the process of creating a pop up book requires the patient and skilled hand of a paper engineer.  Creating a pop up book is an artistic endeavor. 

Alas, at the time in which pop up books can be produced in the most intricate way ever and at a lower cost of design, our modern society is moving away from printed material.

There can be no doubt that electronic delivery of books is harming the publishing industry.  Fewer books in every category are printed every year, with no indication that the trend will change.  Popup Books are difficult and expensive to print.

Printing a pop-up book involves printing full-color illustrations on heavy card stock, then carefully passing the printed page through an expensive die-cutter.  From there, many pop-up books require people to carefully hand-glue folded strips of card stock to the pages so that the pages will open correctly for the reader.  The binding of a pop-up book is also difficult and time-consuming to assemble.

People have been collecting and treasuring pop-up books for centuries.  Like any other collectible, their worth is largely derived from it's intrinsic value and scarcity.  Buying popup books that are fresh off the press is a worthy strategy to accumulate a collection that will appreciates in value while it delights its readers.
