Level 4 Readers
What are the tell-tell signs that your child is now ready for level 4 readers?
- They read independently.
- They are seeking out chapter books. Understanding literary elements is becoming second nature. And they are ready for in-depth discussion about the literature they are reading.
Children on this level are able to skim text to gain information. The stories these children are interested in are growing more and more complex. No longer are their predictions as sure and accurate, because the plot is more diverse. Level 4 readers have learned that they have to complete the story in order to know the ending of the story. Books for the level 4 reader may also contain multiple plot lines that the reader weaves together into a complete story.
You can encourage your level 4 reader by supplying great books to stretch their minds. Books should reflect their interest and should be able to be read independently. A fabulous activity to do with your child is to obtain 2 copies of the same book. A child at this level can be a part of a book club of sorts. Discussions of the books read together can be wide and varied. And you will most likely be surprised at the thinking level of your reader. Discussions can go above and beyond plot and literary elements to feelings, comparisons, and complex predictions.
As children approach this level of reading, maintaining a love of reading can be a challenge. Some children might start to feel like reading is boring and a waste of time. It is during this crucial time that we model positive reading behavior and present them with quality books that will keep their interest. The goal with young readers is to make reading an enjoyable independent past time. This goal is easily met when great books are readily available.

Success will be found as your child dives into one of these wonderful books on their own and enjoys the stories and information they are able to obtain.
