Dr Seuss Books

Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) has been delighting children since the 1960's.  His books have stood the test of time and are as fresh and fun to children today as they have ever been.  Dr. Seuss books will teach your children rhyme and introduce them to a world of imagination. 

Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1904.  His grandparents were all German immigrants.  He attended Dartmouth College and graduated in 1925. His first book was, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, which was rejected over 20 times before publication. 
 

During WWII Geisel drew political cartoons and helped in the war effort by drawing posters for the treasury department and was also later an Officer working on US propaganda films.  At the close of the war Geisel and his wife moved to California where he wrote some of his most popular books, Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat and the Hat, and The Grinch, just to name a few. 
 

Geisel’s use of fun characters, made-up words, and anapestic meter were a combination that children loved.  His creation of Cat and the Hat was born when he was challenged to write a book using only 250 words (words that children could read) and create a story that children loved.  Not only was he successful, he wrote a book that has managed to stand the test of time and remains popular today.  He wrote many beginning readers for children and published 46 books over the course of his lifetime.
 

Children today enjoy the works of Dr. Seuss for the same reasons children loved his books 50 years ago.  His creative artwork and stories are captivating.  And many of his books are ones that children can read on their own as they are learning to read.  His books have remained so popular that several have been made into movies.
