Counting Books

While they might not immediately grasp the skills we are introducing to them, they will amaze us with their ability to understand!  Research has shown that young children are extremely open to learning.  Their little minds are like sponges just waiting to soak up information.  This makes childhood and ideal time to introduce them to the concepts that will stay with them throughout their lifetime. 
 
Counting books are wonderful books to read with young ones because they are naturally hands on.  Children enjoy touching the pictures on the pages as they count the objects.  The also enjoy the one-on-one time they get to spend with you.  Soon they are learning without even realizing it.  What starts as a fun game, results in learning a skill. 
 
There are a hundreds of counting books available for young children.  Some contain familiar characters, many contain familiar objects, and most are geared for beginning counters who are learning to count from one to 10.
 
Familiarity is something to be desired when selecting a counting book for a baby.  Books that count things as simple and familiar as fingers and toes are always a hit.  As babies grow to toddlers the basis of the counting book can change.  Toddlers are still working on the concept of counting and numbers.  Often the books that are ideal for this age will include appealing characters (like monkeys!) and there will often be a bit of a story line, and even humorous situations.
