In today's children's books market, there exists a strong tendency for publishers and authors to create books that tend toward either boys or girls. This is apparent when you see the number of princess books, craft books, gossip-style books and the like for girls. Not to mention the number of book series that are marketed to young female readers. For boys, there is just a strong tendency to make books about cars, trucks, and the like. There is also a strong number of book series that are marketed to boys.
However, we find a strong and large middle ground between girls and boys in the appeal to books that feature animals. From the earliest reader books to books that cover young teenagers, you can find books that cover every imagineable aspect of the world of animals.
Babies love board books that have nothing more than photos of animals with one or two word descriptions. Toddlers love books that have not only the pictures of animals, but contain the animal sounds. As a parent, it really is fun for kids to learn and repeat animal sounds as they read these books. There are an unending number of books about farm animals, tropical animals, desert animals and everything in between.
As kids leave the toddler stage, their capacity to learn about animals grows with them. Kids become curious about where animals live, how they live and what their environmental needs are. An excellent example is sharks. We've found that five to seven year-olds love books about sharks--how they eat, where they live and all else. This level of understanding about an animal is very normal for a preschool to kindergarten-aged child.
